The terms, "retail" and "restaurant" have different meanings to different people, but in the world of credit card processing these words simply imply that the card is present and physically swiped through a Point of Sale (POS) device.
Card presence is important because Visa®/MasterCard® assigned different rates based on the percentage of card present "swiped" transactions versus card absent or "keyed in" transactions. We offer many types of POS equipment and only the most popular options are listed here. A point of sale device is usually made up of a terminal and a printer. The terminal is the square keypad with the card reader mechanism. The printer produces the receipt and daily totals report. There are also combination terminal/printer devices which have become very popular lately due to the small amount of counterspace that they occupy.
